The management believes that GoPro cameras need support from a software ecosystem to be successful. The newest idea is media editing apps. The company recently purchased two apps (Splice and Quik) for a total cost of $105 million. By creating a seamless publishing process, the management hoped to draw demand for cameras.
Never mind the purchasing price of the apps, just the idea itself is terrible. How can you build an ecosystem if the foundation (i.e. the GoPro cameras) is crumbling? An ecosystem would allow GoPro to retain customers and generate repeat sales (like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)), but the customers would have to be there first. When sales are getting halved year over year, management's top priority should be on the products, not on fringe assets that may or may not generate demand for the actual products.
From a financial perspective, the acquisitions did not make any sense either. The company spent $105 million on two non-income-producing assets (the apps) and assumed the ongoing costs (i.e. headcount)."
"Currently, the management is not focusing on the core issue of falling demand, instead choosing to develop a costly ecosystem that cannot be functional without the products themselves. Finally, I would be wary of the GoPro's torrent of PR material, as there seems to be little substance."
